If you would love to explore the depths of the Apostle Islands, this trip is for you. We will depart from Bayfield, paddling the 14 miles to Stockton Island, setting up a base camp at the group site, and venturing out on daily day trips. You will have several choices as to where we will go including going to sea caves, sea stacks, a tombolo with its associated lagoon, a beautiful beach with it’s famous “singing sands), the lighthouse on Michigan Island, and several other possible choices. There is even great hiking opportunities such as to the tombolo and the beach mentioned above, and to an old quarry where some of the famous brown stone buildings in Chicago obtained their building materials. If you like a little more challenging trip into the Apostles and want to see some great geology, this is the trip for you. The trip will be 4 days and 3 nights.
The trip is aimed at people who have been previously been on Lake Superior or other body of water the same size or larger. Paddlers should be comfortable in conditions up to Level 4 according to ISK trip guidelines. If there are any questions or you need clarifications on what these conditions are, please contact Dan Morrison. Contact information is in the ISK directory.
Minimum skill requirements:
• Must be able to do a wet exit outdoors
• Must be able to do a self-rescue outdoors (paddle float, re-enter and roll, etc)
• Must be able to do at least one assisted rescue outdoors (rescuer and rescuee)
• Paddle at 3-3.5 mph for one hour (i.e. the time it takes to cross from island to island)
• Paddle 15 miles in a day (with breaks)
• Paddle in Level 2 conditions (see above).
Minimum Gear Requirements
• Sea Kayak (16 ft or longer) with spray skirt, bulkheads (or float bags), and deck lines
• 2 paddles
• PF

Join Jeff and Michelle Forseth, ISK members and ACA certified instructors, for a one-day Introduction to Coastal Kayaking course. You must be an ISK member to register for this class.
The class covers basic strokes and boat control, landing and launching, equipment & gear, rescues, safety, navigation & coastal dynamics of wind and waves. Expect a safe and fun intro to the sport of coastal kayaking. The class is limited to 8 participants.

**If you don‘t have a sea kayak and want to try it out, please contact Michelle Forseth and she can help arrange one for you for an additional cost!

These include: T assisted rescue, self rescue (paddle float, scramble, and/or re-enter and roll), Scoop (injured paddler that can help with own rescue), Hand of God (incapacitated paddler stuck in boat upside down). LAUNCH time is 9:00. Session will be 1.5 hour followed by a paddle. Registration is required but free and will be limited to 8 people.
